In a year dominated by TikTok, it only felt fitting for Laneway to feature an artist that represents the phenomenon the social platform is causing in the music world. Ask any 13-22 year old about Benee, and you’ll find yourself watching the TikTok dance to Benee’s viral hit ‘Glitter’.
And while Benee’s set certainly displayed the popularity of this song, Benee’s star power goes beyond TikTok sensation. The 20-year old New Zealand artist has both talent and presence beyond her years, dancing and posing around the stage with the adoring audience wrapped around her finger. Benee is no one-hit wonder either, with a charming and downright catchy collection of pop reminiscent of Laneway alumni Clairo and Billie Eilish. Admittedly, I came into Laneway without knowing much about Benee. I walked out of Laneway as one of her many adoring fans.
