A Conversation With: Two Another / by Jack Gobbe

Two Another pair their homegrown sound with the inspiration that comes with life on the road on latest single ‘Another Night’. We talked to the producer duo Angus and Eliot about the new single and direction!

Hey guys! Congrats on ‘Another Night’, we’re loving the new direction and are keen to hear how it came about. What has influenced your shift in sound?

Hey, thank you! We are really excited to share this new project with people. The sound is definitely a bit different on this one. We felt like it was the right time to do something different and push ourselves - things can get stale pretty fast so we wanted to change our approach for this release.

On our last release, we noticed that people were really resonating with the tracks where the songwriting was more thought-out and personal so we wanted to really strip things back and tell more of a story with these songs.

How did the collaboration with UTTERS come about and what role did they play in the creative process?

We met UTTERS in a writing session a few years back and we really got along. Nothing really came out of that initial writing session but we stayed in contact and kept writing. Once we had a collection of tracks ready we both knew he was the right person to help realise the vision. He has become a great friend and we are now in the middle of working on an album with him - you guys should check out his band Prep

Your hometown Sydney is renowned for its forward-thinking electronic music. How did coming up in the Sydney music scene shape your career?

Yeah, this is so true. I don’t think we were aware of the influence Sydney/Australia had on us musically until we moved away and people started telling us. We grew up in the Bang Gang / Modular records era with bands like Cut Copy, Tame Impala, Bagraiders & Flight Facilities really paving the way for this cross over blend of electronic and live-sounding music. Sydney is also where we met lots of musicians who we would jam with including ‘The Goods.’  These early sessions added a completely new live soulful element our previous more electronic demos didn’t have.

On the other hand, you’re now Amsterdam and London based. How has travelling and living abroad changed your sound?

Living overseas and also living in separate cities has hugely changed the sound. Initially moving away meant we were experiencing lots of new things for the first time so there was a lot to draw from and write about. We were also living together in the same place in London and the weather kept us indoors most of the year which meant we were doing music all hours of the day. Now living in separate cities means the process has changed - it’s more like a long-distance relationship where you try to make the most of the time you have together and then it’s a lot of texts in between those meet up's!

Collaboration has been at the core of your music since the start, who is on your dream collaborations list?

Ah damn, that’s a big question! Dead or Alive? We would have loved to work with Mac Miller & Marvin Gaye, but people who are still with us would include Frank Ocean, Pharrell, Kaytranada, J. Cole, Free Nationals, Mark Ronson, Danger Mouse & Gorillaz.

Let’s say you can only listen to five songs for the rest of your life. What would they be?

This is the hardest question we've ever been asked!! Seen as we have to listen to the songs for the rest of our lives we tried to cover all the different situations we would listen to music - so there's something to dance to, something to cry to etc..

What does it take to make it as an artist in 2020?

In 2020 what defines ‘making it,’ because I guess back in the day you either made it or you were back living with your parents. Now there are a lot more avenues to exist as an artist where you can make a living and put your work out on your terms.

To us, that’s the most important thing. It was really important for us to develop our sound independently and do things at our own pace. That allowed us to build a streaming following and then find the right partners to elevate that - we’re excited about the partnership we have with Sweat It Out in Aus!

What does the rest of 2020 look like for Two Another?

We are currently rebuilding our live show and doing an EU tour in April then finally doing shows back home in Aus around the EP release. We are also in the studio working on a debut album and hoping to come back to Australia over the summer at the end of the year.

Thanks guys! We’re loving the new single and are keen to catch you guys in May!
