Five Hip-Hop Acts We Can Expect to See This Summer / by Jack Gobbe

Any Aussie music fan should be anticipating the slew of summer festivals coming up as lineup hints begin to emerge. With the likes of Falls Festival, Field Day, FOMO and Origin NYE all taking place around New Years, it is inevitable that the festivals will share several international acts, particularly the latter three due to their hip-hop/electronic orientation.

After sussing out artists’ touring schedule and recent releases, here are five hip-hop acts likely to head down under this summer.

Migos

Likely to visit: Origin NYE, Field Day

Migos’ presence in the festival circuit this summer is a certainty. Despite their Australian tour last year, the Atlanta trio are headlining New Zealand’s Bay Dreams festival on 2nd January, an event that historically shares many acts with their festival neighbours across the pond. With the beloved Culture II under the belts, the trio is armed with enough new material to satisfy fans that saw them only twelve months ago, and are expected to play Origin on New Year’s Eve before gracing Sydney at Field Day on New Year’s Day.

Cardi B

Likely to visit: Origin NYE, Field Day

Just like Migos’s certain Australian appearance, Cardi B is all but guaranteed to play across Australia over the summer due to appearing at Bay Dreams festival in New Zealand. The pop/rap heavyweight will be an explosive addition to the predominantly male-orientated lineup that several of these festivals attract and will open the potential to see her on stage with partner and Migos member Offset.

Logic

Likely to visit: Falls Festival, Field Day

With the popularity of Vince Staples at the most recent Falls Festival, organisers would be likely chasing another dynamic hip-hop act that still has crossover appeal with fans of alternative music that the festival generally garners. Having never been to Australia before, the appearance of Logic is overdue and highly anticipated. With a clear calendar ahead of October, there’s nothing stopping the influential artist from making his Aussie debut at Falls Festival and potentially Field Day.

Rae Sremmurd

Likely to visit: FOMO

Having already been confirmed by FOMO festival themselves to be playing the national festival, Rae Sremmurd is set to soar. With a widely adored back catalogue and hot off the release of SR3MM, the duo will undoubtedly up the ante of the well-renowned festival.

Action Bronson

Likely to visit: Field Day, FOMO

Aside from shaving his iconic beard, Action Bronson has been quiet recently. However, a clear calendar ahead of October and rumours of a forthcoming release sound like a perfect reason to head down under. Bronson adores Australia, having toured two years ago and even gracing our shores for VICELAND’s “F**k That’s Delicious” program. With a cult following and back catalogue built for a live set, Bronson would be a valuable undercard act on a festival that appeals to a wide audience.
