We’ve all wanted to relive our favourite live music experience.
Renowned for their cinematic spectacle, the chance to witness RÜFÜS DU SOL in action at any time is nothing to shrug off. Pair their grand electronica with an equally as marvellous environment and you have an important piece of Australian music history.
While I (somehow) haven’t caught the band in person, ‘Live from Joshua Tree’ captures that alluring essence that every fan describes. As the sun begins to set along the Great American West, the well-oiled machine of RÜFÜS DU SOL’s live set glows brighter than the desert sun.
It only takes the opening line of “New Sky” to realise that this project is so inherently a part of the RÜFÜS DU SOL identity, particularly when considering the subject matter of their latest record, ‘Solace’. As frontman Tyrone Lindqvist trades both pensive and regretful lyrics between pulsating noise, the sun descends and marks a change of pace in the set.
Party starter ‘Desert Night’ wasn’t just included for its apt title, with its bopping melody dragging you deeper into this immersive production. Even quieter moments in the set pay off, namely the sorrowful whispers of ‘Solace’ building up to a whirling crescendo of synths and drums.
With dusk in full descent, the familiar chime of ‘Innerbloom’ begins. I can only imagine the magnitude of hearing this song live, a dream enhanced by the awe-inspiring rendition within this live set. As Lindqvist’s croon echoes through the empty valley, the beloved droning synths kick harder than you’ve ever heard them. ‘Innerbloom’ will always be a testament to RÜFÜS DU SOL’s sound, an anthem equal parts harrowing as it is triumphant.
With ‘Innerbloom’ knocking you down, closing track ‘No Place’ picks you back up. The journey of Lindqvist’s lyrics through thick and thin tie this whole project together, and emphasises the world that RÜFÜS DU SOL has built through years of pushing boundaries.
This film is just the latest endeavour in a career framed by progression. The world of RÜFÜS DU SOL has prevailed and flourished, and will continue to do so, and I’m certainly here to stay. To quote the closing song, there’s no place I’d rather be!
