Five Beach House Songs to Spin Before Their Australian Tour / by Jack Gobbe

Revered dream pop band Beach House are set to kick off their Australian tour at The Tivoli in Brisbane, complemented by the ethereal pop of local artist Hatchie.

Having last toured in 2016, which included a Sydney Opera House show that was described by The Music as a “testament to the band’s enduring commitment to creating unforgettable sonic experiences,” Beach House are set to exhibit their sweeping discography to Australian fans, including cuts from their widely adored album, 7, released last year.

In anticipation of their tour, here are five essential Beach House songs to listen to before catching them next week.

Lemon Glow (7)

As the debut single from 7, Lemon Glow presented an insight into the evolved sound of the band on this recent record. With a looping drone kicking off the track, vocalist Victoria Legrand’s vocals slice through Alex Scally’s distorted guitar to a mesmerising effect. The psychedelic soundscape of this song seems almost purpose built for a live show, and thus finds its place on our essential listening list.

Master of None (Beach House)

Whereas Lemon Glow signifies the evolution of Beach House’s sound, Master of None demonstrates the band’s knack for dreamy ballads full of equal parts joy and melancholy. You only have to look at the longevity of this song in the band’s ever evolving set list to understand the power of this early cut.

Silver Soul (Teen Dream)

Beach House truly hit their stride with 2010’s Teen Dream, an album where their past work seemed to have truly flourished into what it always set out to be. While the band has proven themselves as even further masters of dream pop with each subsequent release, Silver Soul is a beloved song in Beach House’s discography due to its ability to conjure a haunting albeit uplifting sound.

Elegy to the Void (Thank Your Lucky Stars)

Beach House truly broke into their current shoegaze inspired sound on Elegy to the Void. The song slowly builds towards a wall of fuzzy guitars, Legrand’s vocals echoing throughout the cacophony. The immense scale of this track is set to be a spectacle in a live setting, once again demonstrating the band’s otherworldly talent for truly gripping slices of music.

Sparks (Depression Cherry)

You can’t look past Sparks in Beach House’s discography, a melodic journey pierced by sharp slithers of guitar reverb. Legrand dances around the frequent beat breakdowns, flourishing once again in Scally’s ethereal yet somehow gritty guitar work. As the first single from their acclaimed Depression Cherry record, Sparks will find widespread adoration from both casual and diehard fans alike.
